The Washington Redskins beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-22 on a last second, Billy Cundiff fake missed field goal attempt that accidently passed within inches inside the left upright. The Redskins were shocked, but not nearly as much as they were when Cundiff missed three field goal attempts during the game.
Tell me again why the Redskins cut Graham Gano, because I forgot. #Shankopotamus— Anthony Brown (@SkinsHogHeaven) October 1, 2012
No task is insurmountable for Robert Griffin III who coolly led the Redskins on a seven play, 56 yard, 1:39 drive to put the Redskins and Cundiff in a position to redeem themselves with one second to go.
Well, Redskins fans, the young QB seems like a pretty good player.— Dan Graziano (@espn_nfceast) September 30, 2012
For all of RGIII's heroics, all of Washington's touchdowns were on the ground. Pierre Garçon recovered a Griffin fumble in the end zone for the first score. Griffin rushed for the second and Alfred Morris ran 39 yards for the third.
Both RGIII and Morris set themselves up as Rookie of the Week candidates, again.
Washington's defensive secondary fell apart in the second half after controlling the Bucs offense in the first. They held Josh Freemen to a passer rating of 49 in the first half, but then Freeman found his big play receivers.
Mike Williams set up Tampa Bay's first touchdown on his 65-yard reception to start the drive. Vincent Jackson turned the trick on Tampa's second scoring rive when he caught Freeman's 54-yard pass. Tiquan Underwood caught a 25-yard, underneath pass to set up the Buccaneers go-ahead field goal with under two minutes to go.
Then, Griffin went to work:
- 15 yard pass to Santana Moss
- 20 yard pass to Fred Davis
- 4 yard pass to Evan Royster
- 15 yard scramble to put the ball in Cundiff's questionable field goal range on the Bucs 26.
- Completed a 7-yard pass to Moss to move the ball to the 31 after a false start penalty on G Kory Lichtensteiger.
Cundiff set up from there to make the winning field goal.
The media says Cundiff "redeemed" himself. Not hardly. His three misses stressed his team, not to mention fans. Washington experienced its lowest point production of the season with those misses.
Nice winning kick, Cundiff.Now start packing. #redskins— SuperSkin (@SuperSkin1) September 30, 2012
Across the field, Bucs placekicker Connor Barth extended his streak by kicking his 24th and 25th consecutive field goals. Billy Cundiff, you got some 'splaining to do.
A Rutgers receiver damaged the Redskins for the second week in a row. Last week, Mohamed Sanu threw the opening touchdown score that game Cincinnati the early lead. On Sunday, Tiquan Underwood caught three passes for 39 yards, none more fatal that the 25-yarder that set up Tampa Bay's last score.
I saw Sanu and Underwood play when Rutgers beat Navy in Annapolis a few years ago. That was the game that brought Rutgers and Schiano to my attention. The upset was quite an introduction. I'm not surprised to see Sanu and Underwood in the pros. That Schiano is there is perplexing. College coaches do not have a great record of accomplishment in the NFL. Schiano will eventually join Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino, etc. out the door. Schiano will land on his feet whenever that happens, no doubt on some SEC team.
Washington finishes the quarter season at 2-2, right where most expected. Some foolish analyst projected as few as two wins for the 'Skins this year. (Whatever) The Redskins will stay within a game of the division leader after this weekend's action.
Pregame collision knocks Brandon Meriweather and Aldrick Robinson out of game
Aldrick Robinson just said "i'm good" and talked to Meriweather who says he is fine, he said nothing serious. #Redskins— ESPN 980 (@ESPNRadio980) October 1, 2012
Mike Shanahan: Aldrick Robinson had a concussion and "was out for a minute or two" after his pregame collision. #Redskins— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) October 1, 2012
